The Civic Type R isn't just a hot hatch. This car is race boiling. A perfect combination of power, handling and control, it delivers maximum performance from one of the most potent, naturally aspirated engines ever built.
The Civic Type R's low front and aggressive stance will get your pulse going long before you've slipped into the racing seats. Yet this hatch also leaves plenty of room for your friends and stuff. Everything about it feels right.

Racing-red sports seats. The Type R’s front seats feature lateral bolsters for a strong embrace. They’re specially constructed from vibration-absorbing materials. The superior lumbar support and finely stitched Alcantara® material feel great too.
Prepare for take-off. Right down to the stitching on the steering wheel and gearshift, red is the signature colour of the Type R interior, set off by brushed metal and black. It’s a very hot look.
Surprising cabin and boot space. This performance vehicle is great for road trips with friends and kids. The centrally-mounted fuel tank opens up the interior space, so everyone’s comfortable in the cabin and there’s 415 litres of cargo space in the boot. When you want to pack in bulky cargo, like a bicycle or board, the 60:40 split rear seat folds completely into the footwell, giving you 1282 litres of storage capacity.
Leather-wrapped steering wheel. The multi-function, black leather-wrapped steering wheel keeps audio, cruise control and information display controls within easy reach. Its tilt and telescopic adjustments ensure a custom fit.
6-speaker audio with iPod and USB connectivity. The Civic Type R features convenient connections to your favourite digital music players, MP3 and WMA file compatibility, and integrated iPod controls*. It makes it easy to browse playlists and tee up the right tunes for every driving mood.
Dual zone climate control. The driver and front passenger can each set their own desired cabin temperature. Then, no matter what’s happening on the outside, the fully automatic air conditioning system keeps things inside just right.
Engine start button. Just push the button and the engine comes to life with that provocative Civic Type R low roar. It’s a very cool way to start every trip.
Steering wheel mounted audio controls. Whether you’re flicking through FM stations or shuffling your iPod* playlist, steering wheel mounted controls make driving safer and more convenient. Cruise control and information display buttons are also on the wheel.
Drilled aluminium sports pedals. To complement the race-inspired design of the cockpit, drilled aluminium sports pedals and footrest (with rubber inserts) are standard equipment. These not only look great, they save weight.
*iPod is integrated through vehicle’s audio system display for iPods from 5th generation onwards and all iPod Nanos. Older iPod models will only operate through audio system when controlled through the iPod, and firmware updates may be required to achieve compatibility with the vehicle’s audio system display and steering wheel mounted audio controls. Please refer to your iPod User Guide for information on iPod firmware updates.
From every angle, the Civic Type R says "bring it on". With just one glance at its bold, genuinely original styling, you can tell this is a truly awesome car. Sitting low to the ground, with a black mesh grille setting the tone for its aggressive lines, the Civic Type R is clearly cut from very cool cloth.
Hot looks in any colour. You make the call. Milano Red. Alabaster Silver. Crystal Black. And Championship White. This won’t be easy. You know you’re going to look good in every one.
High-performance aerodynamics. The Civic Type R cuts through the air with poise, efficiency and balance. Its artfully and ergonomically designed grille and bonnet reach up in one fluid arch to the windscreen and roof. It's a very smart look.
Mint accessories. Customise your Civic Type R into exactly the vehicle you desire. Add to the comfort of its cockpit, sharpen its commanding looks with front and side skirts and trim, or simply give it a flash new emblem set.
18" seven-spoke alloy wheels. You might expect to see alloys on a car this hot. So we raised the game with these seven-spoke 18” alloys. What you get is fantastic high-performance and amazing visual appeal.
Triangular fog lights. When the road ahead needs extra illumination, these stylish fog lights have the brilliant intensity you need. What's more, they accent the car's futuristic look.
Flared wheel arches. With performance wheels like these, you want to show them off. The flared wheel arches emphasise the Civic Type R's sharp 18" alloys.
Sculpted side skirts. Every car enthusiast knows it's the details that count. The Type R's side skirts draw your eye down the length of the vehicle - as well as help protect the exterior from scratches.
Rain-sensing wipers. Since the rest of this car is so smart, we thought its windscreen wipers deserved the same level of precision. These wipers kick in when they sense rain drops and adjust their speed automatically as needed.
Honeycomb mesh front grille. The unique front grille integrates seamlessly with the wrap-around headlights. The central red "H" badge is a not-so-subtle reminder of the Civic Type R’s racing pedigree.
Wrap around rear spoiler. Enhancing the Civic Type R’s aggressive stance, the rear spoiler helps keep the rear tyres firmly planted during hard cornering and at highway speeds.
Winner of Wheels magazine's Automotive Design Award. The Civic Type R won the 2008 Wheels Automotive Design Award in recognition of its interior and exterior excellence as well as overall vehicle design.
There are sixteen different assessment criteria for this prestigious award, including innovation, visual impact and form.
To take home the prize, the Civic Type R outclassed some tough competitors, including the Audi R8, S5 and TT; the Holden VE Ute; the Renault Scenic; the Saab 9-3 Cabrio; the Volvo C30; and VW Eos.

The dream: to create the ultimate race-inspired driving experience. Since it was first applied to a high-performance motorcycle, the Red 'H' Badge has distinguished Honda's purest race-bred engineering. The philosophy behind Type R is not about building the biggest or even the fastest engine. It’s about creating a car that epitomises an exhilarating, precision-engineered driving experience.
Built for maximum performance. As the revs rise on the Civic Type R, you’ll understand why this car has legions of fans. The engine’s smooth surge of power creates a driving experience like nothing else on the road. One test drive and you’ll be hooked, too.
Tight racing suspension. The MacPherson strut up front on the Civic Type R features high castor settings. This tight suspension really involves the driver, communicating how the car is responding to the road while also reducing vibrations. For the rear, a torsion beam design provides sharp steering response and cornering rigidity.
A high revving 2.0 litre DOHC i-VTEC engine. The Civic Type R's powerful 2.0 litre engine's double overhead camshafts (DOHC) set in motion a total of 16 valves with i-VTEC variable timing and control. The result is optimised performance for top-end output and low- and mid-range flexibility.
Naturally aspirated big power and torque. Without any turbocharging, the Civic Type R punches up some very serious numbers. It rips 148kW of power at 7800 rpm, and 193Nm of torque at 5600 rpm, a level of sports performance that makes it one very hot hatch.
Drive by wire throttle. For more responsive acceleration, the Civic Type R does away with a conventional throttle cable, replacing it with a fully electronic system.
Drive every drop. Fuel efficiency is something that Honda takes very seriously. The Civic Type R delivers an impressive 9.3 litres per 100km.* It's a number that compares very well to similar-sized cars that aren't built for racing performance.
6-speed manual gear box. The sweet-shifting, close-ratio gearbox has a high-performance clutch that feels light and precise as you move up and down the range. The light molybdenum flywheel provides perfectly synchronised response.
Enhanced traction. The Civic Type R features an advanced Limited Slip Differential (LSD) to maximise traction and prevent wheel slip during fast or tight turns. It gives you added control and heaps more fun.
Large ventilated disc brakes. Large disc brakes on all wheels (300mm at the front, 260mm at the rear), combined with the ABS and Electronic Brakeforce Distribution systems, ensure exceptional control in all road conditions.
Cruise control. On the highway, cruise control makes driving a little easier. On the Civic Type R, it’s easy to set and resume with steering wheel mounted controls.
Powerful safety too. The satisfaction that comes from owning a car like the Civic Type R comes from every aspect of its performance. That’s why we devote so much attention to safety features we hope you’ll never need. Stability and traction control, six airbags, ABS brakes and more. They’re all standard equipment on the Civic Type R.
Standard rear parking sensors. To help get you in and out of tight spots, the Civic Type R gives you the added convenience and security of rear parking sensors, with an acoustic warning when objects are in close proximity.
Advanced G-Force Control (G-CON). With Honda’s G-Force Control technology, the Civic Type R’s body is designed to help absorb the impact of a collision and protect the passengers inside. Hit the play button to learn more about how G-CON helps shield the passenger cabin.
6 airbags. Front, side and curtain. The driver and front passenger are protected by front and side SRS airbags. The front airbags have a dual-stage deployment system matched to the severity of a crash. In addition, full-length curtain SRS airbags wrap front and rear occupants in a wall of protective cushioning.
Anti-Lock Braking. The Civic Type R’s Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS) and Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD) safety features work in tandem to optimise braking forces during an emergency.
Stability control. The Civic Type R’s advanced Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA) system combines control of the brakes, engine speed and Traction Control System (TCS) to help bring the car back under control if you find yourself in trouble.
Keyless entry and immobiliser. In addition to the convenience of central locking and keyless entry, an immobiliser system adds security. It ensures the engine only starts when the code in the key’s transponder matches that in the engine’s computer.
Laminated windscreen. The Civic Type R’s laminated windscreen helps increase passenger safety by reducing the risk of shattered glass in a collision or as a result of road debris.
Tyre deflation warning system. For enhanced safety and performance, a tyre deflation warning system is standard equipment on the Civic Type R. The system informs the driver when the pressure of one or more tyres is too low.
Front seatbelt pretensioners. Front seat occupants receive double pretensioners as standard. All four seating positions are fitted with 3-point seatbelts and an innovative seatbelt reminder system warns the driver if any occupants have not buckled up.
Honda recently upgraded its little hotrod with a Championship White paint option, new 18-inch graphite alloys, a limited-slip diff, rear parking sensors and USB connectivity.
